History

The Tierra Verde area was among the first parts of Florida to be discovered by Spanish explorers during the expeditions of the 16th century. However, the picturesque island chain wasn’t permanently settled until several centuries later. Thanks to its strategic location off the shore of central Florida, it was tapped as an Armed Forces base during the Spanish-American War. After a quiet period that stretched until the mid-20th century, real estate developers began taking stock of the islands.

In the early 1960s, the construction of a bridge to the mainland spurred development in earnest. Fortunately, strict local and federal laws prevented the area’s sensitive ecosystem from being totally overrun. Today, Tierra Verde is a beautiful mix of high-end housing and natural environments.

Geography

Tierra Verde is a series of islands known as “keys.” It sits several miles off the Pinellas County mainland and forms part of a chain of islands that stretch along much of the central Florida coast. Florida Highway 679 connects Tierra Verde with the mainland. Away from the island’s residential neighborhoods, sandy white beaches and mangrove swamps predominate.

Population & Demographics

Tierra Verde has a year-round population of just under 4,000. Most locals are well-to-do professionals who work in St. Petersburg, artists who appreciate the area’s beauty, and seasonal residents who return to the area to escape harsh Northern winters. In light of the fact that it’s surrounded by protected land, it’s unlikely that Tierra Verde will grow much in the years to come.

Things to Do in Tierra Verde, Florida

Tierra Verde is synonymous with outdoor recreation and beauty. The settlement is adjacent to Fort DeSoto Park, a natural area that also houses military artifacts. The islands’ beaches are popular with surfers, sunbathers, and bird-watchers. Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to spot marine mammals and birds as well. Just across the mainland bridge, the campus of Eckerd College offers excellent cultural opportunities.

Climate & Weather

Tierra Verde’s climate is marked by hot, humid summers and somewhat milder winters. Although precipitation is common throughout the year, a clear uptick occurs during the summer and fall months. Afternoon thunderstorms occur several times per week during most of the year. However, winters occasionally see dry spells that can last for a week or more. Thanks to the moderating influence of the Gulf of Mexico, frosts and freezes are virtually unknown in the Tierra Verde area.
